Before you send it

Be specific, not huge.A date range and a subject make a request easier to fill, and harder to call “overly broad.”
Ask for records, not answers.The law covers records an office keeps. It does not oblige anyone to answer questions or make new documents.
Send it in writing.The law does not require it, but the statute ties its damages rule to written requests sent by hand delivery, electronic submission or certified mail ORC 149.43(C)(3).
Find the right inbox.Many offices post a records contact or portal on their website. Sending it there starts the clock cleanly.
Write down the date you send it.Then log it in a Request File so the weekdays count for you.
